Summer Reading Challenge

The Chris Sain Jr. Summer Reading Challenge is designed to increase and improve reading and comprehension skills as well as recommit our youth to reading. Studies show that the link between academic failure and delinquency, violence and crime is largely connected to illiteracy and the inability to conjugate words.

Why We Do It...

  • One in four children in America grow up without learning to read
  • 2/3rds of students who cannot read proficiently by the fourth grade will end up in jail or on welfare
  • 6 out of 10 households do not purchase a single book in a year
  • To determine how many prison beds will be needed in the future, some states actually base their projection on how well current elementary students are preparing on their reading tests
  • 50 percent of Americans read so poorly they are unable to perform simple tasks such as reading a cereal box or prescription drug labels
  • 44 million adults are now unable to read a simple story to their children.
While the statistics are eye-opening and alarming, the numbers resonate deeply with Chris. He grew up in an environment where many of his peers nor their parents could not read or write adequately. A sad reality, Chris felt a need early on to read and read proficiently, to not only break the cycle but also take himself to places he was not able to physically travel to. The inability to read is the number one reason kids act out  and misbehave in school. The acting out is a cover up for the shame and humiliation they feel so to draw attention away from their area of deficiency, students use bad behavior to mask the truth. With help from teachers and a good support system (parents, coaches, mentors, etc.) many students possess the ability to read at grade level and beyond. The Chris Sain Jr. Summer Reading Challenge exists to ignite students with a passion for reading and literacy through offering incentives for their efforts.
Schools should contact Chris if interested in transforming their students lives and perception about reading. Please email chrissainjr@gmail.com
